The Connection Between
Patient Trust in AID Systems and Improved Diabetes Management Among People with T1D

What's the Story?

Automated insulin delivery (AID) systems have become common care components for individuals with Type 1 diabetes (T1). Yet since AID systems are relatively new, there remain underexplored questions of how much patients trust them.

This study examines how patient trust in AID systems correlates with the perceived effectiveness of the system and how they alleviate diabetes management burdens.

Study Findings

Statistically significant differences indicated with asterisks  (*p<.05. **<.001).
  • Review habits as a proxy for trust: Respondents were split between passive and active reviewers based on how frequently they verified their AID system’s response to blood glucose changes.
  • Glycemic control by reviewer type: Compared to active reviewers, a higher percentage of passive reviewers had an HbA1c greater than the clinical recommendation of 7.0%.
  • AID system algorithm ratings by reviewer type: Passive reviewers were more likely to rate their AID system’s algorithm as optimal compared to active reviewers. Correspondingly, active reviewers were more likely to review their algorithm as either too aggressive or too conservative compared to passive reviewers.
  • Perceived cognitive benefits and satisfaction with diabetes management by reviewer type: Passive reviewers also reported experiencing fewer diabetes-related disruptions, greater reductions in the effort required for their diabetes management and improved sleep, as well as greater overall satisfaction with their diabetes management while using their AID system.
