The tie that binds people with diabetes is the daily question of what to eat and when. To understand this better, we conducted mobile qualitative research with people with diabetes who are members of our panel. For a period of several days, we asked participants to record selfie videos telling us about: 1) their diabetes diet, 2) their diabetes day, and 3) their diabetes struggles.
We invite you to watch this 4-minute selfie video reel featuring real people describing their very real struggles.
Through this innovative and longitudinal method, we were able to capture the daily pain points and ongoing small struggles that people with diabetes regularly face. Although each of these decisions is seemingly slight, over time the burden becomes significant.
Key insights include:
- People with diabetes have a variety of opinions regarding what they think they should eat. If you ask 5 people with diabetes what they should eat, you will get 5 different answers.
- There is no rhyme or reason to diabetes. A person can eat the exact same thing two days in a row with completely different results. This is incredibly frustrating.
- Diabetes management occupies an enormous amount of emotional real estate. It is part of the decision rubric. Every meal. Every day.
